NetSuite timesheets or a field time app?

What NetSuite's own time tracking does well, where crews outgrow it, and what to ask of an app beside it.

If your projects live in NetSuite, the first question is whether to track time in NetSuite itself.

What NetSuite does well#

NetSuite's weekly timesheets put project and task lines in one grid, with bulk entry and approvals by user or project. Office staff who already work in NetSuite, or in the Employee Center, can enter hours there. SuiteProjects Pro adds a mobile timesheet with offline entry on iPhone.

Where crews outgrow it#

Crews on a job site need things a desk timesheet was not built for:

  • Clocking in at the gate, often with no signal, rather than typing a week of hours on Friday.
  • Proof of presence: a QR code or a location check at the punch.
  • California premiums worked out: meal and rest premiums, daily overtime and double time from the actual punches. We found no California premium logic in NetSuite's own options.
  • A payroll that is not NetSuite. Paycom, ADP, Paylocity and Gusto each need their own file and earning codes.

What to ask of an app beside NetSuite#

  • Does it read employees, projects and tasks from NetSuite, so nobody keeps two lists?
  • Does it write one time entry per person, day, project and task, and only after approval?
  • Can managers keep approving in NetSuite?
  • Does it use REST and OAuth 2.0, not SOAP, which Oracle is retiring?
  • Does it need a SuiteApp installed, or just a role?
  • Is NetSuite included in the plan you would buy, or only in a top tier?

How Oh! Thyme answers#

Yes to the first four; it needs only a role and an integration record; and NetSuite is included in every plan. See the comparison and the NetSuite integration.
